CDI:  New Policy for Strangles Vaccination-

Due to the latest research, we will no longer be requiring horses to be immunized against Strangles.  Unvaccinated horses will be stabled separately, and will have use of the outdoor wash stall.  Please check your horse’s temperature before you arrive at our facility, and don’t come if your horse has a temperature, and/or runny nose.

Bombroofing Your Horse Clinic

The following article was displayed in the January 2008 PVDA Newsletter .

On December 2, 2007, The Chesapeake Dressage Institute (CDI) was pleased to welcome and host a horse and handlers clinic Bombproofing Your Horse with guest Sergeant Rick Pelicano.  Traveling across the country teaching others the "comfort zone" method, Pelicano Equine Training, LLC.’s owner Sgt. Rick Pelicano, actively extends his expertise and skills to other horse enthusiasts.

Instruction was provided initially with the horse under lead and then graduating to under saddle, all the while listening to a customized music cd of different sounds funneled through CDI’s indoor stereo system.  This cd provided such audio as traffic noises, children playing, dogs barking and show style noises to create the scenario and a bombproof acceptance to whatever noises could potentially arise while out horseback riding.

Auditors and Guests at the event were able to watch this presentation from CDI’s heated stadium seating and while sipping hot cocoa from the indoor heated viewing-lounge connected to the oversized dressage in door-arena.  The participants in this clinic experienced a course that initially brought horse and rider anxiety and then concluded with all of the participants and guests laughing and oohhing and ahhing while horse and rider competed in an indoor soccer competition from horseback!  Fun and learning was had by all.

First Meeting of Local Trainers Concerning
Clinics and Seminars Specifically for the Professional

On November 11, 2007, a group of local riding professionals got together for dinner at the Chesapeake Dressage Institute to discuss organizing clinics, seminars ,etc. tailor-made for Training the Trainers. There is a lot of interest in forming a group to share contacts and suggestions, so a dinner was organized. We ended up with a lively discussion, and many
great ideas.

We've had several ideas mentioned for seminars, both mounted and unmounted, that should appeal to trainers, among them:

  •   Discussing training theory debates

  •   Holding continuing education classes

  •   Hosting clinics with the best credentialed instructors to offer training for the
riding professionals (without an audience, if desired)
We are open to suggestions for a name. Here are some so far:
  •   Instructors and Trainers Club (or Organization, Group, etc.)

  •   "Training the Trainers" Club"

  •   "Riding Professionals" Club

Thank You,

Janet Richardson-Pearson, Founder and President

George Williams Clinic

The Chesapeake Dressage Institute was thrilled to welcome back George Williams for his third consecutive year at CDI.

Despite almost two decades of performances with the world-famous Tempel Lipizzans, and a list of high-profile committees and boards he served on in the dressage community to promote the sport in the US, until his name flashed onto the reader board at the CDI in Oldenburg, Germany, aboard the Westphalian mare Rocher in 2001, 'George Williams' was virtually unknown. However, after only two years of consistently top-ranked national and international Grand Prix placings, which included a campaign for a spot on the US Dressage Team for the World Equestrian Games, plus a record-setting performance in the Musical Freestyle at the 2002 Dressage at Devon, 'George Williams' has become one of the best-known names today in the sport of dressage worldwide.

Ultimate Horse Barns

The Chesapeake Dressage Institute was recently featured in the Ultimate Horse Barns book by Randy Leffingwell. The volume is a photographic journey through America's most prestigious farms and CDI was thrilled to be included.

Leffingwell: " The love of horses often finds its expression in the horse barn--in the grandeur of the architecture, the extravagance of the detail, and the extent of the comforts that owners lavish on their favorite creatures. The masterpieces of equine architecture featured in this book attest to that devotion."
